Hundreds of spectators enjoy Scottish Alternative Games in New Galloway

Hundreds of spectators enjoyed New Galloway’s biggest event of the year on Sunday – the Scottish Alternative Games. Anticipation was high ahead of the 21st holding of the Glenkens spectacular which originally began in 1977 at Parton.

Competition was fierce across the traditional tests of strength including tossing the sheaf, hurling the curling stane and the tractor pull.

In the blue riband event, the Gird ‘n’ Cleek World Championships, local girl Elizabeth Spernagel beat off all-comers to retain the title she won last year, when she became the youngest ever winner.

And the final was a real family affair with Elizabeth’s dad Ralph taking second and Alice McIntosh, a regular supporter of the games, third.
