More than 600 people have died in Morocco after a powerful earthquake struck about 50 miles from the city of Marrakesh late last night.
The quake's epicentre was near Oukaïmedene and officials say its 6.8 magnitude killed 632 people. Although the epicentre of the earthquake was Morocco's High Atlas mountains, residents of Marrakech report that some buildings had collapsed in the old city - a UNESCO world heritage site that is a popular destination for Brits.
Morocco’s National Seismic Monitoring and Alert Network measured the quake at seven on the Richter scale, which struck at 11.11pm on Friday.
A frantic rescue effort was taking shape overnight and this morning in the mountainous terrain, where many affected people are said to be in hard-to-reach areas.
