A Scots man reportedly had to grab his dog and jump onto a mattress to escape a ferocious flat fire at the property below.Hero firefighters raced to the scene in Edinburgh, at around 8.17pm on Wednesday, July 24, as flames and smoke were seen billowing from a first-floor property.

Greg Mcintosh who lives next door to the block of flats, told how a neighbour above the burning apartment saved himself and his pet in a dramatic escape.

The 32-year-old told Edinburgh Live: “My dog was going mental, I was half asleep and just heard commotion in the street. I walked to my window and looked down and the flat was on fire, someone from below shouted to me that I needed to get out of my building. "The boy above the flat on fire had to get help out his window, he had to chuck his mattress out the window, then his dog, followed by himself."Around 30 firefighters battled the blaze with one casualty rescued by crews who remained at the scene until 1am on Thursday.

The block suffered blown-out windows in the blaze with scorch marks visible up the side of the building.A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: “Six fire appliances and supporting specialist vehicles were mobilised to the scene where crews extinguished a fire within a first-floor flat of a four-storey building.“One male casualty was rescued from the building by firefighters.
