Empty pub in Hyde will now get a new lease of life

An empty pub in Hyde will soon be converted into a shop for locals to use. Clarkes Arms Hotel closed in July 2022 after bosses could not find a landlord despite efforts to keep the establishment going.

Attempts were made to get a new tenant for the pub with advertising done locally to try to get community involvement but this was not taken up, according to planning papers.

As efforts to keep the pub open failed, plans to convert it into a new convenience store have been approved by Tameside Council. Planning papers suggest that the new site will require a manager and three part-time staff, so will create new jobs in the area. “The local residents and community have not actively pursued an Asset of Community Value to try and keep the pub open,” planning papers read. “The area is served well by local public houses and there are also others a short bus ride or drive away. “The pub has been closed for over 12 months and no new owners or tenants have come forward to manage the pub.
