In news guaranteed to bolster the national pride of Scots everywhere, last week it was revealed that Stonehenge's iconic Altar Stone came from Scotland rather than Wales, as previously believed.

Earlier research had suggested that the monumental Altar Stone at the famous English neolithic monument was probably from the Brecon Beacons (Bannau Brycheiniog) mountain range in southeast Wales.

However, the new study led by Australian scientists has determined that the six-tonne slab actually comes from more than 460 miles away in northeast Scotland, and was likely transported by sea. This fact might seem surprising, but there is actually a longer history of stone circles in Scotland than in England, with not one, but five sets of Scottish standing stones that are older than Stonehenge.

It seems stone age Scots were really leading the way when it came to creating these stunning monuments.Nobody knows for sure what stone circles were used for, but most archaeologists agree that they served some sort of ceremonial function.
