That record, “Loving You,” is finally seeing the light of day and shedding additional daylight on Nelson’s supreme talent as a player, which wasn’t always the main point of focus in the Nelsons’ family band, for obvious reasons. As a happy byproduct, this beautiful labor of love also casting sunshine on Shires’ skills as a vocal interpreter, as they both take on Willie songs, standards (“Over the Rainbow” and “Summertime,” the latter with a guest vocal from Bobbie’s brother) and other shared favorites.

But some movies are about more things than others, and as you watch “Desperate Souls, Dark City and the Legend of Midnight Cowboy,” Nancy Buirski’s rapt, incisive, and beautifully exploratory making-of-a-movie documentary, what comes into focus is that “Midnight Cowboy” was about so many things that audiences could sink into the film as if it were a piece of their own lives. The movie was about loneliness. It was about dreams, sunny yet broken. It was about gay male sexuality and the shock of really seeing it, for the first time, in a major motion picture. It was about the crush and alienation of New York City: the godless concrete carnival wasteland, which had never been captured onscreen with the telephoto authenticity it had here. The movie was also about the larger sexual revolution — what the scuzziness of “free love” really looked like, and the overlap between the homoerotic and hetero gaze. It was about money and poverty and class and how they could tear your soul apart. It was about how the war in Vietnam was tearing the soul of America apart. It was about a new kind of acting, built on the realism of Brando, that also went beyond it.

Charna Flam Sheldon Harnick, lyricist for “Fiddler on the Roof” and “Fiorello!,” and creative partner to composer Jerry Block, died on Friday morning at his home in Manhattan, The New York Times confirmed. He was 99. Harnick met Bock in the late 1950s, and in 1958 they collaborated on “The Body Beautiful,” a musical set within the world of prizefighting. But quickly thereafter in 1959, they collaborated on “Fiorello!,” a musical painting a portrait of the notorious New York City politician Fiorello La Guardia. “Fiorello!,” written by George Abbott and Jerome Weidman, followed the New York City mayor, who held office from 1934-1945, and drew in theatergoers for nearly 800 performances. The production won a Pulitizer Prize for drama and three Tony Awards, including the prize for Best Musical, which it shared with “The Sound of Music.”
