‘Cruel Summer’ Season 2 Makes A Splash On Freeform With Network’s Top Telecast In 2 Years

EXCLUSIVE: Cruel Summer has made a splashy return to Freeform, with the Season 2 premiere marking the network’s top telecast in two years — since the Season 1 finale of the hit series in June 2021.

After seven days of delayed viewing, the Season 2 premiere drummed up 2.6M viewers across linear and digital platforms, according to Freeform.

That’s up more than 1,000% from the live+same-day audience of 223,000. Through two episodes, Cruel Summer is averaging 2.3M total viewers, marking Freeform’s most-watched season two series of all-time and Freeform’s No.

1 current series. The series is finding continued success due to its next-day availability on Hulu, which is opening it up to a wider audience.

The invitation has come courtesy of Blandine’s teenaged son Benjamin (Alexandre Desrousseaux), who believes, with good reason, that his recently divorced mother is in danger of becoming a recluse — and she wasn’t exactly the life and soul of the party to begin with. The stage is set for a pleasant if meandering comedy-drama powered by the personality clash at its core. “Two Tickets to Greece” opens with a prologue establishing the contrast between these two women as teenagers, and it’s perhaps not strictly required, since this dynamic is telegraphed loud and clear in every glance, line and scene in the movie. But it is necessary to make sense of the film’s best scene, which flirts briefly with a less realist mode of filmmaking.

Michael Nordine author There’s no shortage of great movies about baseball, but there is a severe lack of films about the Negro leagues. The fifth inning of Ken Burns’ expansive “Baseball” covers them with admirable reverence, but feature-length projects — whether narrative or documentary — are vanishingly rare. “The League” is therefore something close to required viewing for devotees of our national pastime just by virtue of its existence, so it comes as a relief that Sam Pollard’s documentary (exec produced by Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson) is also quite good on the merits. Pollard’s prior work as director includes “MLK/FBI” and “Citizen Ashe,” and he’s also edited several Spike Lee joints; in addition to a Peabody Award and career achievement prize from the International Documentary Association, he shared an Oscar nomination with Lee for 1997’s “4 Little Girls” about the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing.
