The public has been warned to be vigilant about scams surrounding the upcoming emergency alert test this week. On Sunday, April 23, at 3pm, everyone who has a compatible UK mobile will get a test alert on their phone as the government trials its new emergency alert system.

It is intended to be used in life-threatening situations including flooding and wildfires, but the alert this week will only be a test.

People don't need to download any additional software for the emergency alert to work and they can opt out of the warning in their phone's settings.

But Which? has warned the public to look out for any scam texts or calls which may be telling them otherwise. READ MORE: Join the FREE Manchester Evening News WhatsApp community Lisa Webb, Which?
