Rishi Sunak today refused to comment AGAIN on the future of HS2 rail to Manchester, amid reports he will announce the scrapping of the northern leg of the line during his keynote speech to the Tory party conference on Tuesday.
A Cabinet meeting will be held in Manchester ahead of an announcement the line will be axed, according to widespread reports.
The Prime Minister is facing a backlash from Tories, businesses and northern leaders, with the Tory mayor of the West Midlands, Andy Street, making an impassioned last-ditch appeal to Mr Sunak not to cancel the link between Birmingham and Manchester. You will indeed be damaging your international reputation as a place to invest." Mr Sunak is due to address Tory delegates and MPs later today as the Conservative Party conference draws to a close.
