A troubled East Kilbride homeless unit is to close indefinitely within the next six months.South Lanarkshire Council Leader Joe Fagan announced the closure of Lindsay House on Friday, describing the controversial unit as "no longer fit for purpose" and confirmed that plans are now underway to relocate residents.The local authority said today an "exit plan" is now in progress with the facility set to close by March 2024.Opened in 1969, the Kittoch Street facility, situated close to many bars, restaurants and bookmakers, has provided short-term accommodation and support for individuals affected by homelessness for decades.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

In particular, trouble associated with the YPeople project that is based within the unit - which deals with people with complex needs, including addiction and mental health issues - was turning the conservation area in to a 'no-go zone'.

There were urgent calls from politicians and community groups to stem what they suggested was a tide of violence in the Village, pointing to an upturn in alcohol and drug-fuelled anti-social behaviour.Lanarkshire Live
