North Lanarkshire Council needs to double number of electric vehicle charging points

The development of electric vehicle charging infrastructure in North Lanarkshire was recently discussed by councillors.The area currently has 174 chargers with private operators due to install a further 248, but reports indicate that a total of more than 1,300 will be required by 2026 with this figure more than doubling by the end of the decade.

It would cost around £12 million to supply the additional chargers.Eight locations have been designated as suitable for ultra rapid charging stations, specifically the village Main Street, Broadwood Loch and South Muirhead Road in Cumbernauld, Stepps town centre, Drumpellier Country Park, two stations in Strathclyde Park and Glebe Street in Bellshill.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

He also questioned the feasibility of 1300 chargers by 2026, calling it “quite a stretch target”.He was advised that the ultrafast chargers were “blue chip sites” chosen for their proximity to motorways while the other chargers would be located more locally, and that the council was
