Man arrested after crashing into Buckingham Palace gates as armed police arrive

A man has been arrested after crashing his car into the gates of Buckingham Palace - the official Royal residence. In dramatic footage obtained by The Sun, armed police can be seen surrounding the suspect, who is on his knees after getting out of the vehicle, as cops shout "keep your hands on your head!" The man crashed into the gates of Buckingham Palace in Westminster, London, at around 2.30am on March 10.The Met Police said a man had been arrested on suspicion of criminal damage.

A spokesperson for the force said: "At approximately 2.30am on Saturday, 09 March a car collided with the gates of Buckingham Palace. "Armed officers arrested a man at the scene on suspicion of criminal damage.

He was taken to hospital. "There were no reports of any injuries. Enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances." An onlooker who saw the crash told The Sun: "I heard a loud bang, and I looked over and the car had crashed into Buckingham Palace. "Police were on the scene pretty quickly - and they got the man out and arrested him." It is not thought that King Charles or Queen Camilla were staying at Buckingham Palace as the crash happened.The King is continuing treatment for an unspecified cancer and has therefore stepped back from his public duties for the foreseeable.

He was last seen in public on March 5 when he was pictured arriving at Clarence House in London after spending his recuperation time at Sandringham House in Norfolk.The King's return to the capital comes after the Princess of Wales' first official duty has been confirmed by the Ministry of Defence for June - carrying out the Colonel's Review in her role as Colonel of the Irish Guards on Saturday, 8 June.
