North Ayrshire 'mountain man' wins top youth worker award

A dedicated youth worker from North Ayrshire was honoured with the National Outdoor Learning and Environment Award at the National Youth Work Awards 2024.

Ross Muir, affectionately known as North Ayrshire's "mountain man" has been instrumental in helping young people overcome barriers and discover the wonders of the great outdoors.

With over 20 years of experience, Ross has been a driving force behind the Duke of Edinburgh (DofE) programme in North Ayrshire, serving as its coordinator and sole staff member.Last year alone, Ross supported over 400 young people by delivering more than 5,000 voluntary hours locally, engaging in activities such as foodbank support, charity shop assistance, and ASN sports support.

He has also championed outdoor expeditions, identifying exciting outdoor activities like mountain-climbing and orienteering, and is always on the look-out for more ways that he can harness the power of youth work to give back to local communities.His dedication to providing these outdoor experiences has been a lifeline for many young people in North Ayrshire, where child poverty rates are among the highest in Scotland.Despite facing personal health obstacles, Ross's unwavering dedication to youth development shines through, serving as a powerful example of perseverance and determination for young people.
