Man, 70, arrested after pigeon shot in garden

A 70 year-old man was arrested after police called to reports of gunshots found an injured pigeon in a garden. The pensioner, who hasn't been named, was held at a 'nearby address' and was questioned by officers on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

An air rifle was also discovered after a search of the property, police in Bolton said. The force said the pigeon was found injured and taken to a vet, but police said the bird was unlikely to survive. It's injuries were described by GMP as believed to be 'unsurvivable'.

In a post on the GMP Bolton South Facebook page, the force said: "PC Waite of the South Neighbourhood Team has responded to reports of the sound of a gunshot, finding a pigeon shot and injured in a garden. "A 70 year-old male has been arrested at a nearby address on suspicion of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and firing an air weapon beyond the premises boundary. "Upon a search of the address, an air rifle was located and seized.
