A centuries-old Kirkcudbright institution is on a firmer footing after gaining several new members. Fears had been expressed for the future of the 600-year-old Haill Six Incorporated Trades due to a drop-off in numbers and support at events.
Deacon Convener Ian D Swan had warned it was “unconceivable but realistic” that the present generation could be the last to uphold its ancient rituals.
However, Friday’s AGM saw a good turnout of deacons and journeymen in the Tolbooth Arts Centre – with five new members introduced and accepted.
Now plans are being laid for ways to encourage more people to be actively involved. General Clerk Ian McIntyre said: “It is very encouraging that we have younger folk coming forward.
