Nitrous oxide now ILLEGAL across the UK after new law passed

The illegitimate use of nitrous oxide, otherwise known as laughing gas, is now illegal across the UK. Under the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971, the substance, which can produce a psychoactive effect if wrongfully inhaled, is now a Class C controlled drug.

Possession of the substance could see repeated users face up to two years in prison while those dealing it could receive up to 14 years.

Other punishments could include an unlimited fine, a visible community punishment, and a caution that would appear on a criminal record.

It comes after the Home Secretary urged police forces to crack down on drug taking in local communities after reports found nitrous oxide-use was linked to anti-social behaviour.
