Kevin Smith remembers Shannen Doherty’s final request to make ‘Mallrats 2’
Kevin Smith has revealed that Shannen Doherty made a final request to do Mallrats 2.The actress, best known for appearing in Charmed and Beverly Hills, 90210, passed away earlier this month aged 53 following a nine-year battle with breast cancer.Earlier in her career, she starred in Smith’s 1995 cult film Mallrats, the director revealing in a new interview that his final conversations with her centred on a possible sequel.“The last conversations we were having was about her coming out to Jersey for the Vulgarathon because she had done a bunch of cons and whatnot, and she met the Mallrats contingency and stuff,” he told People.“So I was like, ‘Oh my God, Shannen, you come and watch the movie in our theater and stuff, that’ll just put you on the throne.'”Smith recalled that she “really wanted to do” a Mallrats sequel, and that a producer is keen to get “going again” despite Smith closing the door after her death.“At the very least, as a ‘for Shannen’, that’d be a cool thing to do,” he suggested.Earlier this year, Smith apologised after Doherty admitted her film career “died” after Mallrats. As for a sequel, Smith revealed back in 2020 that he had written a script for a follow-up movie, titled Twilight of the Mallrats, during lockdown.Doherty’s publicist confirmed her death earlier in July, saying in a statement: “It is with a heavy heart that I confirm the passing of actress Shannen Doherty.
