A new Covid sub-variant has continued to spread across the world after the World Health Organization (WHO) declared the strain a 'variant of interest'.The Omicron sub-variant, unofficially named 'Eris', has resulted in an increase of Covid infections across the UK and many other countries across the world.

With cases rising, some scientists are calling for the return of face mask wearing in a bid to halt the spread after infections more than doubled from 3.3 per 100,000 to 7.2 per 100,000 in the last month.

More than 800,000 people are said to have been infected with the new strain across the UK as Eris quickly becomes the dominant variant.Eris infections now makes up around one in seven cases of Covid pick up by hospital tests, according to the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).There is no evidence to suggest that the new sub-variant causes any new Covid symptoms.
