Jamie-Lee O’Donnell has opened up about returning to her role in Channel 4 drama Screw - revealing that she receiving letters from prison officers ahead of filming series two.
The Derry Girls star plays Rose Gill, Long Marsh prison's newest officer. While she was determined to make a difference in series one, she quickly she realised that it was going to be an almost impossible task.
And it turns out Rose is a character that many in that field of work can relate to. “I got letters from ex-prison officers to say that the show was really realistic,” Jamie-Lee said. “That they were able to relate to it and some of the prisoners and their stories are very, very similar to what they’ve experienced or someone they know.There’s a lot of high praise for it.” Rose has since earned her stripes and has even managed to bond with supervising officer, Leigh Henry, played by Nina Sosanya.
Ahead of season two, Nina teased that Rose and Leigh will continue to grow closer, for the moment. “Leigh wants to stay mentoring Rose and to keep her on the trajectory that she needs to be on,” added Nina. “She also needs to integrate the new prisoners coming in, they bring with them new challenges – so Leigh is sort of a swan.
