Stirling Council has been urged to seize the legacy from last week’s UCI Cycling World Championships by progressing a pair of ongoing ‘active travel’ projects.The event brought fans and competitors from all over the globe to the city for the time trial events from Thursday to Saturday – but there are now questions about how Stirling can capitalise on the momentum created by the championships.Mid Scotland and Fife Green MSP Mark Ruskell has raised the case of a pair of active travel schemes for the area which he says are in limbo while the council decides on its future strategy on the subject.The projects are the so-called ‘King’s Highway’ route – which aims to re-link Stirling and Dumbarton castles via a cycle and foot path through west Stirlingshire – and the construction of a cycle and pedestrian bridge over the River Teith.Mr Ruskell said: “The UCI World Championships were a phenomenal success, Stirling Council and everyone involved should be proud of how they showcased the area as an incredible cycling venue.
I’ll certainly never forget the crowds up the Top of the Town, it was simply awe-inspiring.“Important active travel projects are stalled and it is causing frustration for the communities who are now left waiting until the end of the year, having been told there is ‘no guarantee’ the projects will be supported by the council’s new strategy.”The King’s Highway project gained support from a number of community figures in the area, including Gargunnock Community Trust, as well as Sustrans and Stirling MP Alyn Smith.It would see the existing network between the two castle sites via Gargunnock, with existing links already in place between Dumbarton and Drymen.The MSP added: “I’m disappointed that the council have not
