Ayr United sports scientist Ben Watkiss says club's desire to embrace new ideas will reap rewards

Ayr United's new sports scientist believes his appointment is further proof of the club's aim to make the big time. Ben Watkiss is two months into the Somerset Park role having left behind his Midlands roots.The 27-year-old is the latest new recruit to a growing backroom team being built to boost Ayr's infrastructure.

Watkiss, who previously worked with Birmingham City and Burton Albion, claims the "ambition of the club" tempted him north with the remit of player fitness development.It's all part of a rapidly changing world at United, overseen by managing director Graeme Mathie and his vision to put United on a footing for potential progression up the pyramid.

The arrival of Watkiss was this season's latest piece in the jigsaw, following last summer's appointment of Irish football analyst Shane Power.

And Watkiss believes his job is one that most Scottish lower league clubs will be embracing before very long. He told the Ayrshire Post: "At any level of football, I think the sports science role is now important.
