Watchdog fines TikTok £12.7m for ‘misusing children’s data’ and allowing underage kids on the app

Popular video sharing platform TikTok has been fined £12.7m for “misusing children’s data” and allowing underage children on the app.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) has found that up to 1.4 million kids under 13 were using the platform in 2020, which was against its terms of service.

The watchdog originally said it was potentially going to fine TikTok £27 million for the breaches which has now been cut by over half. READ MORE: TikTok to be banned on government phones in the UK Nevertheless, TikTok says that it disagrees with the decision that has been made and would consider its options.

The regulator slashed the potential fine, which it first announced in September last year, after deciding not to pursue an initial finding that the company had unlawfully used “special category data”.
