A thief nicked a hire car worth £18k from a Stirling hotel after finding a car key on the floor of the reception area.David McCarry, of Denny, made off with the red Seat after he had tried, unsuccessfully, to check in to Stirling Highland Hotel in the Top of the Town in the early hours of February 17, 2022.The vehicle was found in Dunipace more than a week later.Fiscal depute Melissa Phillips told Stirling Sheriff Court on Wednesday that a witness had collected the Seat at 11pm at Glasgow Airport on February 16 and had parked and locked the car at the Stirling hotel just after midnight on February 17.The witness left her car key, purse and luggage at the reception desk before going back to the car to collect belongings before returning.

She then went to her room for the night.At 1.45am, Ms Phillips said, a witness dropped McCarry off at the hotel. On entering reception he was seen on CCTV picking something up from the floor.McCarry then tried to book a room at the hotel, but was unsuccessful because his card was not accepted.He was then observed leaving the building and the red Seat’s lights were seen to flash as he unlocked the vehicle.McCarry then walked down Spittal Street and was seen to use his mobile phone.At 2.15am he returned to the vehicle and stole it.

The vehicle was seen leaving the scene before being lost from sight.At 9am the following morning the hotel resident who had hired the car could not find its key.She went to reception to ask if it had been handed in - and when she went to the car park found the car missing.The matter was reported to the police who later traced McCarry.His agent Frazer McCready said when McCarry had been cautioned and charged on February 22 he told officers where they would find
