Government minister Grant Shapps has demanded that supermarket bosses 'stop overcharging at the petrol pump'. The Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero 'called in' bosses from the likes of Asda, Tesco, Morrisons and Sainsbury's calling on them to reduce prices.
It follows a recent announcement from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) which highlighted that motorists have been hit with higher fuel prices since 2019 as supermarket fuel margins have surged, adding an additional 6p per litre.
To address this issue, the CMA has unveiled plans for a "fuel finder data scheme", aiming to provide consumers with instant access to fuel prices and ultimately drive down costs.
The Government has expressed its support for this scheme, stating that it will monitor prices and margins continuously and take further action if necessary to safeguard competition in the market.
