A Home Office minister delivered an apology for a nationwide outage that caused major delays at passport e-gates. Some of the UK's biggest airports, including Manchester, Heathrow, and Gatwick, were hit by the outage which left travellers queuing up for far longer than otherwise.

In the UK, there are more than 270 e-gates that use facial recognition to check a person's identity and allow them to pass through the country without talking to a Border Force officer.

The mass outage, which was first reported around 7.50pm on Tuesday, meant staff were forced manually process waiting passengers instead.

According to the Home Office, the issue was resolved earlier this morning.
