Cineworld has unveiled plans to close six of its UK cinemas amid major restructuring efforts. The cinema giant, which ranks as the world's second-largest chain, has faced challenges in bouncing back post-Covid, with audience numbers not returning to pre-pandemic levels.
The company has identified sites in Glasgow Parkhead, Bedford, Hinckley, Loughborough, Yate and Swindon Circus for closure in a bid to steer the business back to profitability, according to their statement. Efforts to sell some or all of its locations have not been successful, leading to the announcement that it will shutter the six locations it considers "commercially unviable". Cineworld has four cinemas in Greater Manchester including Didsbury, Ashton-under-Lyne, Leigh and Bolton, with none of the sites identified for closure in the company's statement.
