Spain's goalscorer in the World Cup final against England was told her father had died just after her team's victory. Olga Carmona's first-half goal in the final in Sydney secured Spain's 1-0 win against the Lionesses.

But it was later confirmed by the Royal Spanish Football Federation that Carmona had been told the heartbreaking news that her father had died after the match, the Mirror reports.

A statement from the RFEF on Sunday evening read: "The RFEF deeply regrets to report the death of Olga Carmona's father. The soccer player learned the sad news after the World Cup final. We love you, Olga, you are the history of Spanish football." Reacting to the news a couple of hours later, Carmona paid tribute to her father on social media.
