During the FIFA Women’s World Cup final this weekend, the eyes of the nation will be glued to their TV screens to see if the Lionesses can beat Spain to lift the World Cup trophy for the first time.

However, despite the growing popularity of the team and their many wins - including becoming champions at the 2022 Euros - there is a huge gap between male and female earnings in the sport.

England goalkeeper for the male team Jordan Pickford receives £5.2 million a year from his deal with Everton, while female England goalkeeper Mary Earps is estimated to earn around £150,000 from her contract with Manchester United, reports The Times.

The average annual salary in England’s top tier of women’s football was estimated at between £25,000 and £27,000 last year. Meanwhile, the Premier League equivalent figure exceeded £3million.These estimates mean that some of the game’s top female players are estimated to receive in a year what a male player will earn in a week.
