The SNP candidate in a crunch by-election has blasted Labour after the full impact of the two-child cap on benefits on the local constituency was revealed.Katy Louden hit out after analysis of DWP figures found that 1,620 children in Rutherglen and Hamilton West are affected by the Tory policy. It means 320 youngsters are not considered eligible for a Universal Credit child element, while 180 children not considered eligible for a child tax credits element.Keir Starmer faced a backlash last month after he refused to commit to scrapping the two-child cap if Labour wins power at Westminster next year.Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said his party remained opposed to the policy and would continue to call for its removal. The SNP is going head-to-head with Labour in Rutherglen in one of the most hotly contested by-elections of recent years. The contest was triggered after former MP Margaret Ferrier was booted out by voters following a succesful recall petition.

Louden said: "These figures just go to show how broken the Labour party’s priorities are, that they won’t find the money to lift children out of poverty who’ve been placed there by a callous Tory policy."Keir Starmer is consigning thousands of families in Scotland to poverty by making the political choice to keep the Tory two child cap, having decided alongside Sunak that tackling poverty and helping families is not a priority for them."These are figures that should serve as a reminder to those opposed to Tory austerity how desperately we must work to overturn the two child cap, but this will only fall on deaf ears in Keir Starmer’s Labour."With the full powers of independence Scotland can scrap the two child cap and go further to eradicate poverty for good while
