Humza Yousaf will claim an SNP victory in a crunch by-election will force Labour to rethink its opposition to scrapping the two-child cap on benefits.
The First Minister will use a speech in Perth today to accuse Keir Starmer of making a "political choice" over the hated Tory benefits policy.It comes as the SNP and Labour step-up their campaigning in the Rutherglen and Hamilton West constituency ahead of a by-election in early October.
Starmer faced a backlash earlier this year when he insisted his party would not commit to ending the two-child cap on benefits if it won the next general election.Labour remains the bookies' favourite to win the Rutherglen by-election, after former MP Margaret Ferrier was booted out by voters in a recall petition.
But Yousaf has pointed to the example of a narrow Tory by-election win in Boris Johnson's old seat as proof that an SNP upset could force a rethink from Starmer.Addressing a meeting of the SNP national council, he is expected to say: "Under Keir Starmer, it has become impossible to work out who - or what - Labour stand for, beyond obtaining power at all costs.
