'Small number' of Brits infected with dog disease Brucella canis amid warnings

Health chiefs are growing increasingly concerned over the rising cases of a dog disease that can cause reproductive failure in the animals.

Brucella canis (B.canis) has seen a shocking surge in infection cases this year and has even spread to a small number of humans.

Prior to 2020, only three cases in dogs were recorded, however this year has seen 97 confirmed cases which have been mainly focused on animals in parts of eastern Europe.

Infection in humans, while incredibly rare, has only come from clear contact with already infected dogs. Health bosses have said a 'small number' of people in the UK have been infected with the disease but said the risk was very low.
