Stargazers in the UK will be trying to catch a glimpse of the Perseid meteors as the annual shower peaks tonight - but they may also be treated to a display of the northern lights.

Shooting stars are set to light up the sky as the Perseids puts on a celestial display late on Monday night, August 12, and into the early hours of Tuesday, August 13.

Meanwhile, the aurora borealis may also make an appearance thanks to a coronal mass ejection set to reach Earth tonight. Aurora displays occur when charged particles collide with gases in the Earth’s atmosphere around the magnetic poles.

The sun is currently in the most active period of its 11-year cycle, which means the UK has been getting more sightings of the northern lights than usual.
