Martin Lewis is urging people who have been hit by an unexpected bank charge due to a delay in their Child Benefit payment to contact HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) to complain and seek redress - after the money lands in their account on Wednesday.

HMRC estimated that half a million people are still waiting on payments, and confirmed that money due on Monday will arrive on June 5.

HMRC also said Child Benefit payments due today (Tuesday) will arrive as scheduled. However, the consumer champion took to social media on Monday to provide regular updates on the issue and urged people not to phone HMRC about the missing money, but wait for it to arrive then make a complaint if they have been “left out of pocket”.

Posting on X, formerly Twitter, to more than 3 million followers, Martin wrote: “Once the issue has been fixed, if people are out of pocket, they should complain to HMRC for redress (so I'd suggests this means if you've had a charge as a payment bounced due to no Child Benefit, note it down and then later try asking it to cover that charge).”To help people through the complaints and redress process, MoneySavingExpert.com has created a handy guide which you can read here.HMRC said that around 30 per cent of Child Benefit scheduled for Monday were not made due to a processing error.
