Man United might have to follow Twickenham plan after £100m reveal

As far as iconic sports venues go, there are few more so in the UK than Twickenham. The ‘home of English rugby’, boasting a 82,000 capacity and having been an important part of the sport in England for the last 114 years, Twickenham has some similarities with Old Trafford, the home of Manchester United.

Like Old Trafford, Twickenham’s vast size has continued to make it something of a cash cow, with the stadium bringing in some £10m per game in terms of matchday revenue and accounting for a striking 85% of the total revenue that comes into the Rugby Football Union.

But, like Old Trafford, it has become tired, in danger of becoming a relic of the game in an era where new state-of-the-art stadia has shown it in a poor light.
