Jury to consider whether ‘shortcomings’ contributed to woman's death at psychiatric ward

An inquest jury has been asked to consider whether ‘shortcomings’ during the search for a bed contributed to the death of a young autistic woman who died whilst a patient at a psychiatric ward more than 250 miles from home.

Lauren Bridges, 20, was found unconscious in her en-suite bathroom at the Priory’s Cheadle Royal Hospital at around 10pm on February 24.

She was taken to Wythenshawe hospital where she died two days later. Lauren, from Bournemouth in Dorset, who had a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder (ASD) alongside Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder (EUPD), had been transferred to a psychiatric intensive care unit (PICU) at Cheadle Royal in July 2021.
