Hamilton Accies boss John Rankin says it’s important for his side to build on their win over Clyde when Brechin City visit this evening in the Viaplay Cup group stages.The Highland League champions arrive at New Douglas Park having lost 3-0 at home to Premiership side Livingston, while Accies fought from behind to beat hosts Clyde 3-1, with goals from Andy Winter, Joe McGlynn and Scott Martin.Rankin expects a tough encounter against an opponent he knows well, but says it’s about what Accies do if they want to progress in the competition, ahead of Saturday’s trip to Livingston.He said: “I know [Brechin boss] Andy Kirk really well, I worked with him for a number of years [at Hearts] and I know how he wants to play – he has great ideas in the game.“It will be a tough game.

I know Brechin won the Highland League last season and have really good players from within their squad as well.“I expect them to come and attack, and I expect it to be a good game.

I know it will be a tough game, that’s for sure.“But it’s a case of can we progress from what we did on Saturday and build on it.“It’s important to continue to put our ideas in, get the players to build relationships and get into a rhythm, but this cup competition throw up some strange results at times, so opportunities arise and hopefully we can do the business.”Rankin is still hoping to add to his squad, but says he won’t rush into decisions based on what he needs for the cup competition.He said: “We’ve highlighted positions we think we need to strengthen and we want to do that, but it’s important that we get the right people in.“The group is good just now, the atmosphere within it is growing and we want to try and get the right ones in.“We want to do it quickly, and
