Martin Fellowes hailed goal-hero Alan Lithgow as ‘colossal’ after the big defender helped East Kilbride reach the Lowland League Cup semi-finals.The Kilby interim gaffer watched his side defeat Tranent 2-1 in East Lothian on Saturday, thanks to a Lithgow header and a Bob McHugh strike. It has set up a semi-final at home to Stirling University this weekend and Fellowes was full of praise for his defender. He said: “At both ends of the pitch Alan was colossal, in stature and performance.“He has been great since I came in and the level he’s played at, along with his experience, has been invaluable.“Now he is really getting back into his rhythm on the pitch after a wee injury and on Saturday it looked like nobody was going to get by him.“It was quite fitting that he got us the winner after a great performance.“We played a lot of good stuff in the first half and it is typical that the winner just comes from a long throw that we just fling in the box, and big Al just heads it in.“I was joking about that with the boys after.

All that stuff we played in the first half was lovely but we’ll just keep flinging it to Alan to head it in.“He’s actually so big that when he comes into the box you think ‘I don’t fancy picking him up’.

He is a presence and he was well deserving of his goal.”If defending champions Kilby can get past Stirling, they will face either Bo’ness or Cumbernauld Colts, managed by ex-EK player David Proctor.Fellowes knows they could be reunited in the final but is focused only on the Students. He said: “I’m only thinking about Stirling Uni.“David is doing a good job and he will be desperate to get that trophy as well.
