'Dahmer' Editor Says There Were Many Cut Scenes From Netflix Series That Created Sympathy For Him

The editor for Dahmer – Monster: A Jeffrey Dahmer Story is opening up about the scenes that were cut from the anthology series, and for good reason. Stephanie Filo spoke to Variety about her work, and especially about the show, which had been criticized before for romanticizing the serial killer. Keep reading to find out more… She pinpointed one in particular, citing a scene in episode four, where he returned home from the army to have Christmas dinner with his parents. “That used to play as one full scene, but it felt too heavy on their family dynamic,” she shared. Stephanie says that it was cut and other flashback scenes were then entered in to there was context for his crimes. “That intercutting and seeing the weird things he’s been up to helped give context to the horrific things that were happening instead of having a guy just hanging out with his parents,” she says.

She then also spoke about another scene from episode eight where victim impact statements are read, and said there was a responsibility she felt to be respectful to the victims’ families. “I finally tackled it once I was in the right headspace for it, and that’s how a lot of cutting this series felt,” she says.
