A brave Scots lost her voice box and her food pipe after persistent ear and throat pain turned out to be cancer.Julie Baker was first told the pain was an infection in February 2022 - but after further tests she was diagnosed with throat cancer.

The mum, from Oxgangs in Edinburgh, was then told after biopsies in August that she would have to have her food pipe and voice box removed in order to survive the illness.

As reported by Edinburgh Live, 50-year-old Julie was diagnosed with Laryngeal cancer, a type of cancer that affects the voice box.

The larynx is part of the throat found at the entrance of the windpipe.This part of the throat plays an important role in helping you breathe and speak - and in serious cases the most successful treatment is to remove most parts of the throat, which was the shattering news the mum received last year.Julie said: "I noticed something around June last year, I had pain in my ears and throat and went to doctors who said it was an infection so was given antibiotics but it didn’t clear.
