The nature of the woman's injuries have not been disclosed, but it is understood that she was conscious and breathing before being taken to hospital.

"Two fire engines from Rochdale fire station, the water incident unit from Heywood and the technical response unit from Ashton fire stations quickly arrived at the scene, where one woman had fallen into the river.

Firefighters working alongside colleagues from the North West Ambulance Service (NWAS) used lighting equipment and water PPE to safely remove the casualty, who was then conveyed to hospital. "Crews were at the scene for around 40 minutes." It comes as temperatures reached 30C across Greater Manchester, with today set to be recorded as the hottest of the year after the mercury reached 32.6C in Surrey.
