Six people - two of whom were children - tragically lost their lives in a devastating collision involving a car and a motorcycle on Sunday afternoon.

The catastrophic incident occurred on the A61 between Wakefield and Barnsley on Sunday (July 21), leading to the death of a boy and girl and four others, according to West Yorkshire Police.

In a statement, Wakefield District Police said the 'tragic' incident had resulted in the loss of six lives. The force said their thoughts 'go out to the families of those who have died', who are being provided with specialist support, reports the Mirror. "The collision, which involved two vehicles, happened on the A61 Barnsley Road between Staincross, Barnsley, and Newmillerdam, Wakefield. "Emergency services received reports of the incident which involved a Ford Focus car and a motorcycle at 3.54pm.

A motorcyclist and pillion passenger, one male and one female, were confirmed dead at the scene. "An adult male and female, and two children, one male and one female, who were travelling in the car, were also confirmed dead at the scene." The road has been closed between Shaw Lane and Warren Lane and is likely to remain closed for some time as the investigation continues.
