Well, the fact that she's still alive, for one. And second, she's not white, which may actually be why she's survived for so long.
Gabrielle knows her character's survival instinct is shaped by her race, which makes so much sense.“Something that was very important for me from the jump was that Joe's previous obsessions were a bit more oblivious to certain things, and I wanted to make sure that with Marienne being a Black woman and stepping into this world, that the traits that come innately with being a Black woman still stood true,” the actor, who is Black and Korean, told in a recent conversation.And now that Marienne has (so far) escaped Joe's clutches (the upcoming fourth season finds her on the run with her daughter in Europe), she's even warier, smarter and stronger.
And the fact that fans responded so positively to her in season three helped Gabrielle tap into that strength. “It just pumped up that survival instinct and pumped up the confidence that I had in myself as well as in Marienne to stand in her truth.
