South Lanarkshire Council write off over £3 million in debt

South Lanarkshire councillors have approved plans to write off over £3.2 million in debt.Elected members on the Finance and Corporate Resources Committee agreed to write off a whopping £3,251,699.83 of irrecoverable debts.Debts included £2,196,799.14 in council tax, £301,452.77 in non-domestic rates, £8918.69 in Business Improvement District (BID) levy, £499,862.15 in sundry debt and £244,667.08 in housing rent and associated charges.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

This relates primarily to prescribed debt, sequestrations and estates of the deceased.The accounts marked for write-off in the non-domestic rates system from years 2022/2023 to 2024/2025 equates to £301,452.77, and these debts are deemed to be irrecoverable as the debtor is in liquidation, has ceased trading or has been sequestrated.The write off for the BID levies totals £8918.69.

This is administered by the council on behalf of Hamilton, Carluke and Lanark BID companies and there is no financial impact on South Lanarkshire Council for these
