As the weather gets colder, more and more of us will be suffering from a common cold, cough or sore throat here and there. And while an aching throat is common in the autumn and winter months, it can be a sign of a more serious problem in some cases - and urgent medical attention may be needed.

But it's important to be aware of the more serious symptoms and know when to call 999 or visit A&E, as visits to emergency rooms because of sore throats climbed 77 per cent to 340,441 last year.To help people learn the difference between a common sore throat and something more serious, Abbas Kanani, superintendent pharmacist of Chemist Click, has highlighted the red flag symptoms to be aware of.

He said that a sore throat that has lasted for a long time may be a sign of something more serious, like strep throat or a bacterial infection, reports the Sun.

Strep A, which is a common infection that usually affects children, can require urgent medical attention in some cases. According to the NHS, you should call 999 if they have difficulty breathing, or if they're making grunting noises.Other symptoms to look out for include blue or grey skin, pausing between breaths and their body going limp.
