The latest figures from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) show that at the end of January 2023 there were 5.9million people claiming Universal Credit.
The means-tested benefit is a payment designed to help people on a low income, out of work, or if they cannot work due to ill health or caring responsibilities.
The benefit is usually paid monthly, but can be paid twice a month for some people living in Scotland. However, many claimants may not be aware that certain changes in circumstances must be reported to DWP or it could impact their entitlement or payments and in some cases, lead to a penalty fine or even a court appearance.
Changes that need to be reported include getting a new mobile number or email address, switching to a different bank account, moving address and your rent going up or down.
