Manchester City are optimistic they can sign Chelsea midfielder Mateo Kovacic by the end of June, according to reports. It seems Pep Guardiola is already making contingency plans should either Bernardo Silva or Ilkay Gundogan leave the Etihad this summer.
Club captain Gundogan was named among the list of released players this week, although that does not indicate a final decision.
In fact, both players have stayed coy about what lies ahead, neither committing to staying or leaving. However, it seems Guardiola is hoping to bolster his midfield ranks anyway.
The Evening Standard claims City wish to get Kovacic through the door within the next fortnight for a fee of around £35m. The Croat is said to have accepted contract terms.
