Martin Lewis has warned that people who pay for their energy by direct debit could be being overcharged. It comes after the energy price cap dropped to £1,834 per year for a typical household that pays direct debit.
Despite this, the money-saving expert warned that many direct debit bills are still going up, meaning customers are being charged more than they should be.
The moneysavingexpert website highlighted that this should only apply to standard tariffs and not fixed ones. Speaking on ITV Money Show, Martin said that there is an easy way to check if you're being overcharged and advised on what steps you can take. So do an up-to-date meter reading, make sure you're not in any energy debt. Go online and use an 'is my direct debit Correct' calculator where you put in your annual usage and it should tell you roughly what you should be paying.
