First young midfielder Kobbie Mainoo was forced off within the first five minutes after picking up a knock. The 18-year-old collided with Rodrygo inside two minutes.
Mainoo was helped off by two medics, unable to put his full weight on his foot as Christian Eriksen came on in his place. By the time the Dane was on, United were behind as Jude Bellingham chipped home a classy finish over debut goalkeeper Andre Onana.
