Usher says he won ‘bidding war’ with Justin Timberlake to sign Justin Bieber: ‘There can only be one Justin’

Usher always knew Justin Bieber was “superstar” material. The mononymous R&B icon — born Usher Raymond — revealed last week that he beat out fellow pop star Justin Timberlake when the duo battled to sign then-up-and-coming Bieber, now 29, in 2008.“When you are at the top of your game, some of the greatest things will be presented to you, and it was, I think, right after [my album] ‘Confessions’ that I was introduced to Justin Bieber and Scooter Braun, the musician, 45, told People magazine. The “Yeah!” singer revealed that he presented Braun, 42, with “an offer that I felt like he couldn’t resist.” “We built a friendship, but this would obviously create a partnership that would span us forever, and it was a bit of a bidding war between me and Justin Timberlake,” the “My Boo” crooner continued.

Scooter Braun says he should have handled Taylor Swift situation differently
Taylor Swift‘s master recordings.Back in 2019, Swift confirmed her plans to re-record songs from her first six records in a bid to take control over her music once again after music manager Braun and his media holding company, Ithaca Holdings LLC, acquired Swift’s old label, Big Machine Label Group, back in June 2019.The story then hit headlines again in late 2020 after Swift confirmed that the ownership of her back catalogue has changed hands again for the second time within two years. After news broke of Braun selling the rights to Swift’s music to the private equity company Shamrock Holdings in a $300million (£230m), the singer shared a statement in which she said that the master recordings “were not for sale to me”.“This was the second time my music had been sold without my knowledge,” Swift said. “The letter told me that they wanted to reach out before the sale to let me know, but that Scooter Braun had required that they make no contact with me or my team, or the deal would be off.” Swift’s statement claims that Braun will continue to profit from her catalogue “for many years”.Speaking this week on NPR show The Limits With Jay Williams, Braun was asked about the situation and whether he had any regrets about how he handled the deal.“When you bought the rights to Taylor Swift’s masters, it turned into a really big thing,” Williams said, adding: “If you could go back in time… Would you have handled it differently?”Braun then responded: “Yes, I would’ve.

Scooter Braun says he disagrees with Taylor Swift “weaponizing a fanbase”
Taylor Swift and her fanbase. In a conversation with Ari Melber for MSNBC’s The Beat, Braun discussed acquiring Swift’s masters and how he doesn’t appreciate artists “weaponizing” their fanbase.“The person who owned Taylor’s masters throughout her career was not myself, and when I was buying a record label, I actually said to that group, ‘If at any point she wants to come back and be a part of this conversation, please let me know because I wouldn’t do this deal,’” Braun said in the interview. He continued: “I was shown an email – which has now been made public – where she stated that she wanted to move on that negotiation and wasn’t interested in doing that deal anymore.”Braun later added that he felt “Taylor has every right to re-record”, saying: “She has every right to pursue her masters, and I wish her nothing but well, and I have zero interest in saying anything bad about her.”The music executive, who works with Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande and Demi Lovato, also said that although he’s “never said anything bad about [Swift] in the past, and I won’t start to now” that the only thing he disagrees with is “weaponizing a fanbase.”Watch the interview below.Braun did not specifically say that the pop star had incited her fans to attack him, but said that fans getting riled up can lead to unsafe conditions for families.
