A man and a woman died after being trapped in a car stuck on a flooded road following torrential rain. The pair were rescued from a Mercedes, submerged in water under a bridge, but they later died in hospital, police have confirmed.

Neighbours in Mossley Hill, Liverpool, say the flooding, thought to have happened following a burst pipe, caused a 15ft flood, with water gushing down the side of the bridge 'like a waterfall', the Liverpool Echo reports.

Now, police are appealing for witnesses after the black Mercedes Class 180 became stuck at around 9.20pm. Police patrols assisted by Merseyside Fire and Rescue Services were at the scene until the early hours of Sunday morning.
